Previous Experience in Same/Different Styles of Dance?
If you have previous dance experience and feel that the Beginner’s/Introduction Course (Level 101) might be too basic for you, then this section is for you. In some styles, such as Salsa (Linear Style), there are Fast-Track or Accelerated courses. These courses are designed specifically for people with previous dance experience as the pace of the learning and the expectations are significantly higher than our normal Level 101 courses which are designed for those people who’ve never danced before.
In our Core Styles (Salsa, Argentine Tango, West Coast Swing and Zouk) for the first four levels (Levels 101, 102, 103 and 104) each course includes one free private lesson (55 minutes duration). These private lessons are normally $60 each. Our recommendation is that you take one of these private lessons to begin with. This will give the Instructor an opportunity to assess where you’re at and then the both of you can work out between you which would be the most appropriate level for you to enroll in. The 55 minutes means that you you’ve got the rest of the lesson to ‘catch you up’ on anything you’ll need in order to advance you to the level that the Instructor decides on. The price of the lesson is then simply deducted from the course fee that you pay.
Trying to guess what level you should go into is not an effective solution. The reason for this is that every school has it’s own curriculum and terminology and teaching methods. Added to that, some schools run different leveling systems. For example; a person who has reached the third of three levels offered by one school might look similarly for the highest level course offered by our studio. With Salsa for example the level system goes:
101–102-103–104-201–212-222–232-242–252-301 – with each of these courses being 8 weeks (2 months long). So to choose the 301 course; the expectation is that a student has been dancing for at least 22 months!!! So it DOES pay to have a private lesson up front and that way it means that we’ve got the best opportunity to place you into a course that is the most suitable for you.
